Have you caught a fish with colorful markings on a sunny day? Ironically, despite its scales not resembling a rainbow, this fish is referred to as a Rainbow Trout. This guide contains all you need to know about this multicolored creature!
Many players in Stardew Valley enjoy fishing for the profit, treasure chest, and the variety of fish you can catch in different seasons or weather. Thus, if you want to try fishing for this type of fish, don’t go looking in the ocean because it’s from a freshwater species.
This brightly colored creature is not only beautiful to look at from an aquarium. It also has many uses in cooking, tailoring, and more. If you’re interested to learn more about this fish, continue reading this guide!
What is A rainbow Trout?
You can catch this freshwater trout with any fishing rod, but if you want a higher quality catch, consider using an Iridium rod. Moreover, it has a mixed behavior that uses basic movement patterns; its difficulty value’s 45, and its length reaches 10 to 26 inches. Refer to the table below for the fish’s restoration effects:
Quality | Energy | Health |

Gold | 45 | 20 |
Iridium | 65 | 29 |
Where to Catch a Rainbow Trout?
You can find this fish in freshwater areas during the summer in hot sunny weather. However, you can also get one randomly in Trash Cans. If you use Magic bait, you have a chance of catching it at any time, weather, and season. Here’s a table for when and where you can catch this fish:
Location | Season | Time | Weather |
Pelican Town River | Summer | 6 am – 7 pm | Sunny |
Cindersap Forest River | Summer | 6 am – 7 pm | Sunny |
Mountain Lake | Summer | 6 am – 7 pm | Sunny |
If you’re not in the mood to go fishing, you can opt to purchase it from a merchant who sells it for a higher price:
- Traveling Cart – costs 195g-1000g.
Fish Pond
You can put this freshwater fish, which reproduces every two days, in the fish pond Robin constructs for you. The initial pond capacity starts at three fishes and increases to 10 when you complete the three quests. Aside from gaining XP, you can get orange roe, and a rainbow shell or a Prismatic shard.
Item Requests
To increase your pond capacity, you must provide the following items requested to complete a quest. Furthermore, with each capacity upgrade, the items are harder to acquire since some are from geodes or in the mines. Refer to the table below for what you’ll need to complete a quest for capacity expansion:
Initial Capacity | Item Requested | Fishing XP | Improved Capacity |
Three | • Coral (3) • Honey (1) • Oyster (1) • Refined Quartz (3) | +30 | Five |
Five | • Dried Starfish (1) • Emeralds (2) • Omni Geodes (2-3) • Purple Mushrooms (2-3) | +30 | Seven |
Seven | • Diamond (1) • Gold Bars (3) • Iridium Ore (1) • Jelly (1) • Pickle (1) | +30 | Ten |
Loots
Depending on the pond’s population, your item’s percentage and chance vary. Additionally, producing rarer items like Rainbow Shell or Prismatic shard is more challenging, with only a chance of 1.7 to 1.9% and 0.09%. However, a 0.09% daily chance of acquiring Prismatic shards is worth it since it’s a valuable item.
Item | Population | Item Percentage | Chance | Fishing XP |
Roe (1) | 1-8 | 100% | 23-79% | +12 |
9-10 | 98% | 85-93% | +12 | |
Rainbow Shell (1) | 9-10 | 2% | 1.7-1.9% | +22 |
Prismatic Shard (1) | 9-10 | 0.1% | 0.09% | +90 |
Selling Prices
Even if it’s of Iridium quality, its sell price is lower than Lava eel, Ice Pip, Void Salmon, and other species. Additionally, unlike Sturgeons that produce Caviar, this fish only makes Roe. Thanks to the Fisher and Angler Professions, its selling price increases; here’s the table for Rainbow Trout’s selling price per quality.

Tailoring
In the spool of the Sewing Machine, you can throw this in to produce a dyeable Fish shirt. This trout is also used in the dye pots to create the orange dye. But instead of using it for creating a shirt, it’s advisable to just sell it or cook it in terms of profit.
Gifting
If you give this to Demetrius, Elliott, Leo, Linus, Pam, Sebastian, and Willy, they’ll feel neutral about it. While Haley, Evelyn, and Pierre will hate it if you offer this to them. The rest of the villagers dislike it, so it’s best to avoid giving it to any of the villagers.
Quests
Here are the following quests you can complete in Stardew Valley using this fish:
- Help Wanted Board at Pierre’s General Store. In the Summer, someone will ask you to bring them one rainbow trout, and the reward is 195g and 150 Friendship points.
- Fishing. In Summer, Demetrius or Willy requests 1-4 pieces of this fish at Pierre’s “Help Wanted Board”, you may get 65g per fish and keep it.
Special Order’s Board. In Summer, Demetrius will order ten pieces of Rainbow Trout and pay you its market value and the recipe for a Farm Computer.
Bundles
You won’t need to use this freshwater fish to complete any bundles in the game, so there’s no need to stock up on it. Stick to cooking or dyeing if you can. Additionally, it’s preferable to simply sell it or put it in a pond to produce more loot.
