Stardew Valley isn’t just your run-of-the-mill farming simulator. The beauty of it is immersing yourself in the story and getting to know the villagers of Pelican Town and other surrounding places near the Gem Sea. Moreover, forming lasting relationships and celebrating life with them is just as fulfilling.

There are 28 villagers in the valley and 12 are marriageable candidates. Shane is one of the villagers you can fall in love with and marry! But, first:

Who is Shane?

Shane is certainly a popular bachelor in Stardew Valley. He’s one of the most realistic villagers and is often discussed amongst players on his merits and demerits as a character, friend, and spouse.

Shane Stardew Valley

Where does Shane Live in Stardew Valley?

He’s a villager living in Marnie’s Ranch located in Cindersap Forest. You can recognize Shane through his dark purplish hair and deep brown eyes. He walks around Pelican Town wearing a green polo with a blue Joja jacket.

His birthday is on Spring 20. He would be happy if you gave him a gift he loves or likes on that day. The man might look rough on the outside but he softens up the more you interact with him.

The poor guy suffers from depression and alcoholism. He also doesn’t enjoy his job at JojaMart, which doesn’t help. He’s often unhappy and comes across as rude to everyone he encounters. But once you get to know him better, he’ll eventually open up to you and start his journey to recovery.

Family and Relationships

Shane lives at the ranch with his Aunt Marnie and goddaughter Jas. He has a complicated relationship with both of them for many reasons; however, he grows attached to them eventually and considers them his “ragtag family.” He never had a “family” as a kid, so they are it for him.

He was friends with Jas’ parents and was her godfather. When his friends (Jas’ parents) died, he adopted Jas and moved in with his aunt. There are a lot of theories online about this complex family tree. But canonically, he is not related to Jas by blood, but he is to Marnie.

At the moment, he does not have a lot of friends in Pelican Town, which may be due to his general rudeness and unapproachable aura. However, you can see him dancing with Emily at the Flower Dance during Spring.

What is Shane’s Schedule?

His regular schedule involves work at Jojamart most days (Monday through Friday) from 9 am – 5 pm, with the Community Center not restored. He then spends his evenings at the Stardrop Saloon. He doesn’t work on Saturdays and Sundays except on rainy days.

With the Community Center restored, the Joja employee loses his job and hangs by the fireplace at Marnie’s Ranch or the Stardrop Saloon.

What are the Best Gifts to Give Shane?

The love language of the villagers in Stardew Valley is receiving gifts, and Shane isn’t an exception. If you want to get to know him, develop a friendship with him, or romance him, giving gifts is a great way to achieve that. The best thing to do is familiarize yourself with his schedule so you can find him easily.

With all the people you meet in Stardew Valley, they have an empty ten-heart bar you can fill up once you’ve gotten to know them better and even start to like each other. There are two main ways you can do it: (1) talk to them every day and (2) give them a maximum of two gifts every week.

Each gift varies on the number of friendship points depending on whether they like, love, are neutral about, dislike, or hate the item you’ve given. Birthday gifts will have an (x8) multiplier, and Feast of the Winter Star gifts will have a (x5) multiplier on friendship points.

Shane is, unfortunately, more difficult to please than most villagers. He’s hard to find gifts for, especially if you’re still beginning a new playthrough, trying to earn gold, and getting your farm set up. Here are some detailed tables of gifts that Shane likes, loves, is neutral about, dislikes, and hates:

Movie Theater: Favorite Movies and Concessions

The Movie Theater is a brand new addition to the Stardew Valley Community. You can now watch movies once a week alone or with a guest. The building is unlocked by either completing the Community Center or Joja’s Community Upgrades. It’s a really fun addition to the town!

Shane may seem like someone who doesn’t know how to have fun, but he does enjoy good movies once in a while. Here’s a list of movies and concessions Shane likes and dislikes:

Movies:

Loves:

  • It Howls In The Rain
  • Wumbus

Likes:

  • Journey Of The Prairie King: The Motion Picture
  • Mysterium

Dislikes:

  • Apple Slices

Inviting a villager to a movie they love will gain you 200 friendship points, 100 friendship points with one they like, and no points for one they dislike. Be sure to check out what’s showing every so often! Movies change based on the seasons and when you unlock the theater, so try to take them when their favorite is showing.

Like the movies, the snacks at the concession counter randomly rotate. Giving a villager a snack they love will earn you 50 friendship points, 25 friendship points for one they like, and no points for one they dislike. As long as you steer clear of something they don’t like, you’re good!

Heart Events

Befriending a villager by talking to them and giving them presents they like results in an increase in your friendship level with them. You get to trigger special heart events or cutscene with Shane every time you reach two more hearts with him.

No. Of HeartsHeart Event
0-14You may get a gift in the mail from Shane at any point in your friendship. The chance of getting the mail gift increases as the number of hearts you get with him.

You may receive either a Pizza or Pepper Poppers along with a letter from Shane.
2Go to Cindersap Forest anytime from 8 PM and 12 MN.

You’ll find Shane drinking beer at the dock of the pond. You share a beer with him. He opens up about his depression and expects nothing but happiness for the future. Shane warns you against drinking too much, so you won’t end up like him.

Warning: The beer you drank with Shane will give a +50 increase to your energy and +22 to your health. You’ll also receive the “Tipsy” buff, which reduces your speed by -1 and lasts for 30 seconds.
3He will send you the recipe for Pepper Poppers in the mail. Moreover, Shane will be a bit nicer to you during dialogues.
4Your dialogues with Shane will be so friendlier than before.

Go inside Marnie’s Ranch anytime.

You’ll find Shane passed out in his room, surrounded by empty beer cans. At his aunt’s request, you wake him up with your watering can. She comments that all he does is sulk and drink. His aunt asks him what he plans to do for his future, and he says that he “won’t be around long enough to need a plan.”

His goddaughter, Jas, overhears this and runs out crying. Their aunt chases Jas to comfort her, and Shane crumples and cries harder, apologizing over and over again.
6Go into Cindersap Forest anytime from 9 AM to 8 PM, while it’s raining or storming.

You’ll find Shane lying flat at the edge of the cliffs, surrounded by beer cans once more. He reveals how miserable he is and asks you why he shouldn’t just roll off the cliff.

You are given the choice to respond in four ways:
• You tell him that there’s so much to live for!
• You appeal that Jas still needs him, and she looks at him like her father.
• You say that it’s a sin.
• You tell him that it’s his decision and that you’ll be there for him.

All responses have no do not affect your friendship with Shane.

Later, he asks you to take him to the local clinic. Harvey treats him and suggests he go to a counselor in Zuzu City to treat his mental health.

Shane visits you on the farm the next day, and he informs you of his decision to go to counseling. He apologizes for what happened at the cliffs.

You may respond in three ways:
• You tell him you’re glad you were there to help.
• You remark that he needed that wake-up call.
• You say that you’re just happy he’s still here.

The first and last response will add +10 friendship points, while the second response will subtract -10 points.
7
(Part I)
Go to Marnie’s Ranch when Shane is there after triggering the 6-heart event.

While his aunt is manning the counter, Shane arrives and tells her how much happier he is lately. She makes about beer being on sale and annoys him into admitting he drinks sparkling water these days.

He tells her that he now knows that he can rely on people to help him. He goes to give Jas a gift, expensive shoes that she’s always wanted. She asks how he paid for it and he told her that he recently cut an expensive habit.
7
(Part II)
(Have 2 hearts with both Emily and Clint)

Go to town from 10 AM to 4 PM, when it’s not raining.

You’ll see Shane shooting a scene with Emily and Clint. He tells you about the advertisement contest for Joja Cola where the winner gets 10,000 g. He’ll ask you to participate by walking in the background of the commercial so it feels more genuine. After, he thanks you for helping.
7
(Part III)
He will send you a recipe for the Strange Bun in the mail.
8Go inside Marnie’s Ranch when Shane is home.

Jas leads you to a previously locked room and you’ll see Shane painting a board that says “Fresh Eggs.” He’s surrounded by a group of special Blue Chickens and his favorite white chicken, Charlie.

He talks to Charlie about his future plans and present struggles. When you enter, he tells you about how he’s trying to teach Jas about his knowledge of chickens so she can continue his legacy if he ever leaves.

After the event, you now have a 25% chance of buying Blue Chickens from the ranch shop. Moreover, each egg that you hatch in the incubator has the same chance of growing into a Blue Chicken.
10To trigger the event, go out of your house before 6:30 AM, then head to the Bus Stop from 4 PM and 6 PM.

Shane asks you to go see the Zuzu City Tunnelers, a grid ball team, play. You take the bus to Zuzu City together. The segment changes to a stadium with the both of you in the stands, cheering for the Tunnelers.

He thanks you for being with him throughout all his struggles. Then, he asks you what you think of your first grid ball game:
• You tell him that the noise makes you appreciate how peaceful it is back in the valley.
• You tell him that the fun makes Stardew Valley look boring.

After your talk, he turns his attention to the game when the team scores a goal. Shane kisses you, in his excitement. Then he gets embarrassed and apologizes to you for getting carried away. After a while, you kiss him back which reassures him.

The scenario fades and Shane contemplates on the evening.
Group
10-Heart Event
The Group 10-Heart Event triggers after you’ve given all the bachelors a bouquet, gained 10 hearts, and experienced the 10-heart events with them.

If you gave Alex the last bouquet, you’ll trigger a cutscene at Stardew Saloon, wherein all the bachelors are playing a pool game.

Make sure to have a Rabbit’s Foot with you to prevent them from finding out that you’re dating all of them. They’ll get mad at you and ignore you for the whole week. Also, they won’t accept any gifts from you anymore.

Note: this won’t occur if you’ve already offered someone the pendant or got married before.
14Go into town on any day except Friday any time from 8 AM to 5 PM, for the first day. For the next two days, go into town any time.

First, you, Marnie, and Jas are outside the saloon when Shane comes out of the bar. He says that he hasn’t had a similar sesh in a long time, which causes his aunt to worry. She asks you to talk to him next time he leaves the saloon.

The next day, he leaves the Saloon and you talk to him about his drinking again. He gets upset at the accusation and runs home.

On the third day, you and Marnie stand outside of the Stardrop Saloon. He goes in and you follow him, only to see him standing in front of the arcade machine. He’s surrounded by Joja Cola cans this time. He explains that playing video games help calm his urge to drink alcohol.

You have two responses, both of which have no effect on friendship:
• You tell him sorry and that you should’ve believed him.
• You say you were worried.

After, he tells you and his aunt that it must’ve been confusing to see him in front of an arcade machine.

Marriage

Shane's wedding in Stardew Valley

After offering the Mermaid’s Pendant and having your wedding, Shane moves into the farmhouse. He’ll have his spouse room beside the bedroom, and he’ll have a dedicated small chicken coop behind the shipping bin. He sometimes goes there to hang out with his fave chicken, Charlie.

Once married, your spouse may give you gifts. His small presents differ depending on the day, but here’s a table of what he may give you:

At HomeRainy Days
OmeletBeer
Pepper PoppersLarge Egg
PizzaPale Ale
Void Egg
Pepper Poppers

Quests

Shane doesn’t demand a lot of things, but he may occasionally make a request on the “Help Wanted” Board. Fulfilling the request gives you 150 Friendship Points and some gold worth 3x the item’s base price.
