Sometimes love just doesn’t work out. Maybe you’ve fallen for a different villager, or you’re just a little bored. Luckily, divorce is a quick and easy process in Stardew Valley. Read on to find out how to get divorced in Stardew Valley.
Dating in Stardew
There are several possible spouses in Stardew Valley, but before you get married, you must first get a boyfriend or girlfriend. The process is simple! All you need to do is reach eight hearts of friendship with your favorite marriable NPC. To do so, say hi to them every day and give them their favorite gifts. Remember that there is a gifting limit; two per week. It’s best to always give the villagers something they truly love.
Once you’ve reached a friendship level of eight with any of the bachelors or bachelorettes, you’ll receive a letter in the mail from Pierre. He will say that you can purchase a bouquet from his General Store starting today, for just 200g. Using this, you’ll be able to seal the deal with your would-be spouse!
It seems like you’re starting to get close with some of the townspeople. If you want to show someone you’re romantically interested, you’ve got to give them one of my beautiful flower bouquets. I’m selling them now, for a very fair price! If you want to start a family someday, this is the first step!
Pierre
With the bouquet in your inventory, head on over to the marriage candidate of your choice. If they like you, they’ll accept, and you’ll begin dating.
Marriage in Stardew
Marriage candidates have more friendship hearts than regular villagers. Now that you’re dating, you can get even closer to your favorite villager, and achieve a friendship level of ten. Once you do, you’ll receive another letter in the mail, this time from Mayor Lewis:
“I’m going to give you this advice because I like you and I want you to stay in Pelican Town. If there comes a day that you want to ask for someone’s hand in marriage, you’ll need to give them a Mermaid’s Pendant. Don’t worry, everyone in Pelican Town understands the significance of the amulet. It’s an ancient tradition in this region. Good luck!”
Mayor Lewis
Acquiring a mermaid’s pendant is the next step. You’ll need to wait for a rainy day, head to the eastern pier and talk to the Old Mariner. To learn more, read our article on that topic below:
Once you’ve given them the pendant, the wedding commences in three days. On the day of, you’ll wake up to a cutscene in the middle of Pelican Town, where your farmer will be married to their significant other. Unlike festivals, this won’t consume your entire day. After the cutscene, you’ll be teleported back to the farmhouse, with your spouse by your side, and you can seize the day.
After the ceremony, your new spouse will move into the farmhouse, and gain their own unique outside area, and a unique room, on the right side of your bedroom. This room may or may not totally clash with your aesthetic, but. unfortunately, you won’t be able to change the wallpaper or flooring of the spouse’s room. Maybe this is why you’re getting divorced?
Divorce in Stardew
With that all out of the way, you can enjoy marital bliss. You can stay with your spouse indefinitely, and have up to two children in the upstairs nursery. However, maybe marital life isn’t what you expected. Maybe you found that mod on NexusMods that lets you marry Linus. Whatever your reason, here’s how to get a divorce done in Stardew.
If you want to get a divorce for whatever reason, you’ll need to acquire 50,000 gold. If you’ve got it already and are ready to spend it, walk over to mayor Lewis’ house. Next to the kitchen, you’ll find Lewis’ marriage log; a small book. Interact with it, and you’ll be prompted to spend that money to get a divorce.
You can still change your mind until the end of the day. However, if you go forward with this, your spouse will disappear the next morning and will officially become your ex.
What Happens After the Divorce in Stardew Valley
If you don’t change your mind, you’ll wake up tomorrow to find the spouse’s unique room is gone. In the social tab, your ex-spouse will now be called an ex. Furthermore, for a time at least, they might not be so friendly towards you.
Marriage After Divorce
If you’re a romantic person at heart, you might want to get married again. Being a divorcee doesn’t impede this at all; if some other villager has captured your heart, you can go through this whole process once again.
Marrying The Same Person Again
Maybe you’ve had a change of heart, and you’ve realized that you really did want to stay married to your spouse. However, they won’t accept your gifts, and they won’t speak to you like they used to. Should you give up, and move on? Maybe, but there’s another option; magic!
Due to the complicated nature of this process, it won’t be readily available to you until late game. To unlock this option at all, you must first complete the “Dark Talisman” questline. To trigger it, you must finish refurbishing the Community Center, or fill in every piece of the Joja Community Development Form.
Once done, head on over to the Railroad that’s at the northernmost point in Pelican Town; above Robin’s house, and you’ll get a cutscene with Pelican Town’s favorite wizard.
The next step is to talk to Krobus in the sewers; however, depending on how far along into the game you are, you may not have access to the sewers just yet. You’ll need to acquire the Rusty Key to get in. To get that, all you need to do is donate 60 items to the Museum in Pelican Town. It sounds like a lot, but it’s definitely doable, and we’re here to help!
Krobus will lead you to a separate area in the Sewers – the so-called Mutant Bug Lair – and you can find the Talisman in a chest in this area.
Take the Talisman back to the Railroad and you’ll be able to access a new part of the map. Here, you’ll find the witch’s hut. To get to it, there’s one more thing you’ll need. One jar of Void Mayonnaise. There are a few ways to get it; including fishing right here, next to the goblin.
The important thing is that you’ve finally made it to the Witch’s hut. Here you’ll find three dark shrines at which you can place different offerings to gain different rewards.
What we’re interested in here is the Dark Shrine of Memory. It will erase your ex-spouse’s memories, for a small fee of 30,000 gold. Once done, you can speak to your ex-spouse once again and they’ll be friendly. Furthermore, you can give them gifts, and even date them and marry them for a second time.
Frequently Asked Questions
1. How Do I Break Up?
Naturally, it’s easier to break up with a marriage candidate than to get a divorce. If you haven’t tied the knot yet, you don’t need to pay a huge fee or even talk to Lewis to break up with an NPC. Simply purchase another Bouquet from Pierre, and place it in the Furnace. The bouquet will shrivel up and become dry, and you can gift it to the villager you’re dating. You’ll lose a great number of friendship points, but they won’t be your significant other anymore.
After this, you can date the villager again, provided you have no more negative interactions.
2. What Happens With My Children?
If the player is about to have a child soon, the child will not be born after the divorce has occurred. However, if the player and the player’s spouse already have children, they will not disappear; that is unless you don’t want them to.
In the same Witch’s Hut we mentioned about before, you can offer a Prismatic Shard to the Dark Shrine of Selfishness. If you do, your children will turn into doves, and fly away. You can now have new children, or just stay single and childless if that’s what you prefer!
3. Can I Marry Krobus?
That’s a very specific yet understandable question. There are twelve bachelors and bachelorettes in town, but maybe you’ve got your sights set on Krobus, the friendly shadow person. As it happens, Krobus can also move into the farmhouse; not as a spouse, but as a roommate. Roommates function very similarly to spouses mechanically, so this guide can help you rid yourself of Krobus’ presence as well. Learn more about Krobus as a roommate in the following article:
4. Can You Get Married And Divorced in Multiplayer?
Marriage (and divorce) is indeed not singleplayer mode only function. However, marriage works differently in a multiplayer game. You don’t need a Mermaid’s Pendant to marry a fellow player. Instead, you need a Wedding Ring. You can purchase the crafting recipe for this item from the Travelling Cart in the Cindersap Forest.
There’s no dating such as with the NPCs – you can offer them the wedding ring at any point. After that, you’ll have a normal marriage ceremony, and you have children together as well. Divorce functions the same way too; one player can visit Lewis and file for divorce.
