Everything You Need to Know About Caroline

Introduction

Between long hours on the farm, hunting in the mines, and spending days at the river, it would be nice to come home to a nice cup of green tea. Caroline is a great NPC to befriend in Pelican Town, as this is a recipe that she will send to your character.

Stardew Valley‘s Caroline is the wife of Pierre, the owner of Pierre’s General Store. She is also the mother of Abigail. Since she is already taken, she is not one of the marriage candidates. She is known for her contrasting green hair and blue outfit. Caroline is a free-spirit although she is much more reserved in her adulthood. She is a book-lover and she also enjoys spending time cooking in her kitchen.

Friendship

While Caroline has the option of sending you gifts at any level of friendship, this chance increases as you get to increase your overall friendship level with her. She will have the option of sending you a cauliflower, a parsnip, or a potato. Caroline is known for enjoying fresh ingredients and she shares this love through the gifts she will send you. 

Caroline’s 2-Heart Event:

In Caroline’s kitchen, there is a screen door that is locked. Once you gain two friendship hearts with Caroline, you will be able to unlock this door. Enter the home between 9:00am and 5:00 pm on a day where there is no rain and Caroline will invite you to join her for tea. Once this cut scene is complete, you will receive the crafting recipe for a tea sapling in the mail. The tea sapling recipe is the crafting recipe you gain in order to make a tea bush. 

There are two main purposes for this tea bush. You can sell the saplings on their own for 500 gold. You can also use them to get tea leaves to brew green tea in kegs. You can also get tea leaves by visiting the sunroom off of Caroline’s kitchen once per day to get a tea sapling once this event takes place.

Caroline’s 3-Heart Event:

When you reach three hearts with Caroline, she will send you the recipe for parsnip soup. Caroline is known for using fresh ingredients. She will attach a note saying: 

“Nothing is more satisfying than cooking with fresh vegetables from your own garden! I’ve enclosed a recipe to help you out. Take care,

-Caroline” 

This recipe is especially interesting considering her husband, Pierre, hates parsnip soup. Maybe she is hoping to share her recipe with someone who would enjoy it. 

Caroline’s 6-Heart Event:

At six hearts, you will get more insight into Caroline’s dynamic with her daughter Abigail. When you enter Pierre’s general store, you will see Caroline and Abigail arguing.

In random dialogue, Caroline comments that she was much like Abigail when she was a little girl, which could explain why they butt heads as Abigail is becoming a teenager.

Caroline’s 7-Heart Event:

Once again, Caroline showcases her love of fresh vegetables. Once you reach seven hearts with her, she will send you the recipe for vegetable stew. Enclosed will be the same note that she sends with the parsnip soup recipe.

Gift Guide

In order to increase your friendship with Caroline, it is important to give her gifts that she likes and avoid giving gifts that are neutral or below. You can give Caroling gifts twice a week, plus on her birthday with is Winter 7. Loved and liked gifts that are given to her on her birthday will grant you extra friendship points compared to gifts given any other day.

"You're giving this... to me? I'm speechless."

Caroline loves fish tacos, green tea, summer spangle, and tropical curry. (This is in addition to all universal loves.) Green tea and summer spangle are great early game loved options, while fish tacos and tropical curry are great for later in the game due to their requirements of red cabbage and tropical curry respectively. You may be able to purchase a fish taco from the saloon as part of their rotating stock.

Caroline’s Schedule

SPRING

Regular Schedule: Mondays, and Thursdays

Caroline starts her morning in her kitchen. At 10:00am, she will enter the sunroom before walking the aisles of the general store at 12:00pm. At 1:30pm, she joins Jodi in the town square until 4:00pm when she returns home.

Tuesday

On Tuesday, Caroline hosts an Aerobics class in her living room. This class includes her best friend Jodi, along with Marnie, Emily, and Robin. This class goes from 1:00-4:00pm, but she will be in her living room starting at 8:00am. The group remains in the living room chatting until 6:00pm, when Caroline enters her kitchen to snack on some post-workout cookies.

Wednesday

Caroline’s schedule on Wednesday is similar to her regular schedule. However, instead of hanging out with Jodi, she walks to the fountain that is west of the community center before returning home at 5:00pm.

Friday

Caroline’s schedule on Friday is similar to her regular schedule. However, instead of hanging out with Jodi, she walks to the museum to read books before returning home at 5:00pm.

Saturday (Community Center restored)

Caroline spend her morning, from 8:00-11:00 in her kitchen. She spends the rest of the day enjoying the reading area in the main room of the community center.

Sunday

Caroline spends Sunday morning in her bedroom at her bookshelf. In the afternoons, she is helping Pierre in the aisles of the general store. She then spends the late afternoon below the tree that is south of the community center. She returns home at 6:30pm.

Raining

On rainy days, Caroline spends her morning in the kitchen. From 12:00-1:30pm she reads next to her bookcase. She spends the rest of the day in her living room until she goes to bed at 9:00pm.

Other

On Fall 25, Caroline goes to Harvey’s Clinic for her annual checkup. 

On Winter 16, Caroline spends her afternoon in the town square before attending the night market at 4:00pm.

Ginger Island

Once the Beach Resort is unlocked on Ginger Island, Caroline has a chance of randomly spending a day there. She will not visit on festival days or when she gets her checkup at Harvey’s clinic on Fall 25.

Quests

There are three quests that Caroline offers. On Fall 19, Caroline will send you a letter where she will request that you bring her a pumpkin. Once you deliver this to her, she will reward you with 500 gold and you will gain one friendship heart. Be sure to keep an extra pumpkin on hand in addition to any that you need for the community center for an easy reward.

On the help wanted board outside of the store, Caroline may request a random item. This will reward you with 150 friendship points and three times the base value of the item in gold.

When you unlock the special orders boars, you will have a chance of being offered the “Island Ingredients” quest. She will randomly request ginger, pineapple, or taro root. You will be rewarded with half of the crop’s base price and a recipe for the solar panel. You will need to have Ginger Island unlocked in order to receive this quest from the special order board.

Lore

There has been speculation that Abigail is not Pierre’s daughter, but actually the Wizard’s. This is because of Abigail’s purple hair (which is the same as the Wizard) and based on some dialogue from Caroline.

“Is it just me, or does Abigail have an unhealthy interest in doom and gloom? Maybe I’m just too old to understand.”

“Abby’s always had a strange interest in the occult. I’m not sure where she gets it from…”

“When we first moved to Pelican Town I would take secret walks to the Wizard’s Tower. Don’t tell Pierre, he has jealousy issues. Abigail was born about a year after we moved to Pelican Town. I wonder if she’ll ever experience life outside the valley?”

While there is never a direct confirmation, many players have speculated that these hints are suggesting that Caroline and the Wizard are actually Abigail’s parents and that Pierre does not know.
