Stardew Birthday Guide: How to Become Everyone’s Best Friend

Wondering how to make sense of everyone’s birthdays; everyone’s favorite gifts; how to get them? This ultimate birthday guide has all the answers!

A screenshot of Stardew Valley where someone is celebrating a birthday.
A very special day!

How do I know When It’s Someone’s Birthday?

True to real life, each villager in Stardew Valley has a special day dedicated to them. To find out if it’s someone’s birthday, you’ll need to consult a Calander. There are two ways for you to get a calendar:

  1. In the early game, you can find a Calander in front of Pierre’s General Store.
  2. Alternatively, you can purchase the Calander at Robin’s Carpenter’s Shop for 2000g. Once it’s purchased, you can hang the Calander on a wall in your house.
The Carpenter Shop is open most days from 9:00 to 5:00 pm.

When is it My Birthday in Stardew?

The farmer sadly doesn’t have a birthday. However, you’ll randomly be sent gifts in the mail when you befriend various villagers. Additionally, you’ll also get a secret Santa gift during the Feast of the Winter Star Winter festival.

How Does the Calander Work?

The calendar is very simple to read! Each Season consists of four seven-day weeks. The purple flags signify Festival days. The little villager portraits signify birthdays. If you see a villager in one of the day slots, that means it’s their birthday on that day.

In the above screenshot, it’s currently the 20th of Fall, as indicated by the blue outline, and it’s nobody’s birthday. However, it’ll be Robin’s birthday tomorrow!

What do You do On someone’s Birthday?

Gifting someone a present on their birthday leads to far more friendship points than normal. If you give someone their Loved Gift, for example, you’ll normally gain 80 friendship points. However, if you give them the same gift on their birthday, you’ll earn 8x that amount – 640 points!

What are Friendship Points?

Friendship points refer to your level of closeness with any given villager. It’s signified by a ten-heart meter, though spouses and roommates can have up to fourteen hearts instead. Each heart represents 250 friendship points, and you can view your current progress with any villager by going to the social tab in the game menu.

Higher friendship leads to lots of cool benefits. At two hearts, you can visit the villager’s room and snoop around. You will also gain access to unique events called Heart Events. These are special cut-scenes where you can learn more about the villager and interact with them through dialogue. Each villager has unique Heart Events, usually unlocked every couple of heart levels.

Furthermore, villagers you’re friends with will send you cooking recipes and gifts in the mail! Some villagers, like Linus, can give you special crafting recipes that can be very useful.

The social tab in the game menu.

How do I give a Gift?

To give a gift, you must first have the item you wish to give away in your inventory. Select the item so that it hovers over your head, and then right-click on the villager you wish to give it to. If successful, the villager will say thank you.

How do I give a Birthday Gift?

If you give someone a gift on their birthday, it counts as a birthday gift. It’s that simple!

Loved, Liked, Hated Gifts

Different villagers love, like, or even hate different items you give them. If you give someone a Loved Gift, you’ll get a lot of friendship points. If you give someone something they hate, you’ll lose friendship points with them. Here’s how many friendship points are at stake:

Loved Gift+80 Friendship
Liked Gift+45 Friendship
Neutral Gift+20 Friendship
Disliked Gift-20 Friendship
Hated Gift-40 Friendship

Universal Gifts

While different villagers have different preferences, there are such things as universal gifts. There are universally loved, liked, disliked, neutral, and hated gifts. Spring Birthdays

Kent – 4th Of Spring

If you’re new to Stardew Valley, you might not recognize this name. Kent will come to Pelican Town at the beginning of Year 2, having been serving in the army during the first year. He is married to Jodi and father to Sam and Vincent. Kent will occasionally send the farmer Bombs or Battery Packs in the mail. Additionally, you can learn the Crispy Bass and Super Meal recipes from Kent once you reach heart levels three and six, respectively.

Kent has only two Loved Gifts:

  • Fiddlehead Risotto
  • Roasted Hazelnuts

At the beginning of Year 2, you won’t be able to get either of Kent’s loved gifts. The recipes for his two loved dishes are both received by watching The Queen of Sauce in the later seasons of Year Two. As such, you can either gift Kent one of the universally loved gifts, or settle for a Liked Gift instead. Kent likes all Universal Likes, except for Algae Soup, Sashimi, and Tortilla.

In Year Three, you should try to make some Roasted Hazelnuts for Kent. All you require is three Hazelnuts – a common Fall forageable – and to watch The Queen of Sauce on the 28th of Summer Year Two.

Lewis – 7th Of Spring

Lewis is the mayor of Pelican Town and one of the first villagers you’ll meet. High friendship with Lewis leads to the recipe for Spaghetti and Eggplant Parmesan, at heart levels three and seven.

Lewis has five Loved Gifts:

  • Green Tea
  • Hot Pepper
  • Glazed Yams
  • Autumn’s Bounty
  • Vegetable Medley

Since Lewis’ birthday occurs in the very first week of your first year in Pelican Town, it’ll be nearly impossible to get any of his Loved Gifts in time during your first year. Instead, choose any universal like. One of the easiest and cheapest early game gifts is a nice Salad from the Stardrop Saloon, which you can pick up for 220g.

From year two onwards, the easiest-to-acquire gift for Lewis is Hot Pepper. This is a popular Summer crop that you can grow in your first year. Save a few in your fridge and give it to Lewis next time!

Vincent – 10th Of Spring

Vincent is Sam’s brother and the son of Kent and Jodi. As Vincent is just a child, he will not send you any recipes as other villagers do. However, reaching eight hearts with them and Jas will earn you Spring Onion Mastery, which permanently increases the worth of Spring Onions you sell!

Vincent has five Loved Gifts:

  • Snail
  • Grape
  • Pink Cake
  • Cranberry Candy
  • Ginger Ale

It’ll be tough if not impossible to get any of these items before the tenth of Spring. Instead, opt for a universal like for Vincent’s birthday in Year One.

For Year Two, the easiest gift you can get is a Snail. You can get a Snail by placing a Crab Pot in freshwater, such as Pelican Town River, with some Bait and checking it again tomorrow. You may need to do this a couple of times before you catch a Snail in particular.

Haley – 14th Of Spring

Haley is the Town’s resident fashionista and Emily’s sister. Haley is one of the twelve characters you can marry, so if you’re looking to get close to her, pay close attention to her birthday!

Haley has four Loved Gifts:

  • Coconut
  • Sunflower
  • Pink Cake
  • Fruit Salad

Like with the previous villagers, you may need to settle for a Universally Liked gift in the First Year.

In Year Two, you may want to opt for giving Haley a Sunflower or a Coconut. Coconuts are common forageables in the Calico Desert, so if you have access to that area, this is a great and easy gift. Otherwise, plant some Sunflowers in the Summer or Fall, and keep them handy until next year!

Pam – 18th Of Spring

Pam is one of the more colorful residents of Pelican Town, and the mother of Penny. She will occasionally send you Battery Packs, Beer, and Energy Tonic in the mail. Additionally, at heart levels three and six, she will teach you to make Cheese Cauliflower and Stuffing.

  • Beer
  • Parsnip
  • Parsnip Soup
  • Cactus Fruit
  • Glazed Yams
  • Mead
  • Pale Ale
  • Piña Colada

You’ll be able to satisfy Pam even in your First Year. Beer is easy to acquire, as you can purchase it anytime in the Stardrop Saloon for 400g. That might be a little steep for the early game, however. Instead, you may opt to save one single Parsnip and give her that instead. You start the game with 15 Parsnip Seeds, so this won’t cost a thing!

Shane – 20th Of Spring

Shane will teach you the recipe for Strange Bun and actually make a special color variation of chickens available to you. Shane is also another possible marriage candidate, so if you’re interested in this broody man, here’s how to win his heart.

Shane has four Loved Gifts:

  • Beer
  • Hot Pepper
  • Pizza
  • Pepper Poppers

Beer and Pizza can be purchased from Gus at the Stardrop Saloon from the start of the game, for 400g and 600g respectively. Hot Peppers are unavailable until Summer but make for a great gift from Year Two onwards.

Pierre – 26th Of Spring

Pierre owns the General Store and is father to Abigail, and husband to Caroline. Increasing your friendship with Pierre sadly does not lower the price of his goods, but you will receive the recipe for Blueberry Tart at the three-heart mark.

Pierre has just one Loved Gift:

  • Fried Calamari

Fried Calamari is a complicated dish that you won’t be able to make by the 26th of Spring. You gain the recipe by befriending Jodi first (to three hearts). Then, you need Wheat Flour and Oil – both purchasable in the General Store, and Squid. You can catch Squids in Winter in the Ocean. You can make this dish easily in Year Two, but, sadly for Pierre, definitely not in one. Opt for a universally liked gift instead!

Emily -27th Of Spring

Another bachelorette, Emily is Haley’s sister and the bartender at the Stardrop Saloon. At heart levels three and seven, she will send you the recipes for Salad and Red Plate, respectively.

Emily has nine Loved Gifts:

  • Gems: Amethyst, Aquamarine, Emerald, Jade, Ruby, Topaz
  • Wool, Cloth
  • Survival Burger

Emily is quite easy to shop for! She’s a big fan of gems, and if you spend any time in the mines at all, you’ll probably be able to find a few to give her.

Summer Birthdays

Jas – 4th Of Summer

Jas is Marnie’s niece and Shane’s goddaughter. Once you reach maximum friendship with both her and her best friend Vincent, you’ll gain Spring Onion Mastery.

Jas has three Loved Gifts:

  • Fairy Rose
  • Foods: Plum Pudding, Pink Cake

During Year One, you most likely won’t be able to acquire these items, unless you find them at the Traveling Cart and purchase them at a high price. Settle for a universally liked gift instead.

To prepare for Year Two, purchase some Fairy Rose seeds and plant them in the Fall. Save a few roses to gift to Jas and Evelyn, who also loves this flower.

Gus – 8th Of Summer

Gus is the beloved proprietor of the Stardrop Saloon. At heart levels three and seven, he sends you the recipes for Salmon Dinner and Cranberry Sauce.

Gus has five Loved Gifts:

  • Foods: Escargot, Fish Taco, Tropical Curry, Orange
  • Diamond

Though it may not seem like it, Diamonds are actually the easiest to acquire of all these items. You can find a Diamond in the mines prior to his birthday. They can be obtained from Diamond Nodes in the Mines past Floor 50.

Maru – 10th Of Summer

Maru is Robin and Demetrius’ daughter, and one of the twelve marriage candidates.

  • Metal Bars: Gold Bar, Iridium Bar, Radioactive Bar
  • Crops: Cauliflower, Strawberry
  • Foods: Cheese Cauliflower, Miner’s Treat, Pepper Poppers, Rhubarb Pie
  • Battery Pack
  • Diamond

With so many different gift options, Maru is quite easy to find something for. Probably the easiest item to acquire is a Gold Bar. You can find Gold Ore from levels 80 onwards in the mines. Five Gold Ore can be smelted into a bar with one piece of Coal. Alternatively, Diamonds can also be found in the mines past level 50.

Alex – 13th Of Summer

Alex is Pelican Town’s best athlete and the grandson of Evelyn and George. He’s another marriage candidate, so if you’ve got your eyes set on him, here’s what you need!

Alex has just two Loved Gifts:

  • Foods: Complete Breakfast, Salmon Dinner

It’s sadly almost impossible to get either of these dishes in Year One. Salmon Dinner’s recipe requires a three-heart level of friendship with Gus. After that, you need a Salmon, but these can only be caught during Fall. Furthermore, Amaranth and Kale, the other two ingredients, cannot be grown in Summer To craft a Complete Breakfast instead, you’ll need both a Barn and Coop for access to Eggs and Milk. Then, you’ll need to watch The Queen of Sauce during the 21st of Spring, Year 2, and purchase the recipes for Pancakes and Hashbrowns at the Stardrop Saloon.

Unless either of these dishes pops up in the Saloon’s daily rotating stock, you’re probably out of luck and need to gift Alex a universal Like instead.

Sam – 17th Of Summer

The happy-go-lucky son of Jodi and Kent. This bachelor is luckily quite easy to shop for, unlike the previous villager.

Sam has four Loved Gifts:

  • Pizza
  • Cactus Fruit
  • Maple Bar
  • Tigerseye

The easiest of these to get is a Pizza. These are sold for just 600g at Gus’ Saloon every day.

Demetrius – 19th Of Summer

Father of Maru, and husband of Robin, Demetrius is a local scientist who has a fondness for nature. At friendship levels three and seven, you’ll receive the recipes for Fried Mushroom and Autumn’s Bounty from Demetrius in the mail.

Demetrius has four Loved Gifts:

  • Strawberry
  • Foods: Bean Hotpot, Rice Pudding, Ice Cream

You can buy Ice Cream at the Ice Cream Stand near the Museum. It’s operated by Alex and open between 1 pm and 5 pm on every day except Wednesday, all throughout the Summer Season. It costs just 250g and is sure to put a smile on Demetrius’ face!

The Ice Cream Stand is only open during Summer!

Dwarf – 22nd Of Summer

The Dwarf lives in the Mines and can be spoken to once you destroy the stone barrier in the mine with a Steel Pickaxe.

The Dwarf awaits you further to the right.

The Dwarf has eight Loved Gifts:

  • Gems: Amethyst, Aquamarine, Jade, Emerald, Ruby, Topaz
  • Lemon Stone
  • Omni Geode

All of these gems can easily be acquired in the mine. If you spend any time mining, you probably have a few of these stored somewhere already!

Willy -24th Of Summer

Willy works at the Fish Shop and will introduce the farmer to the art of fishing. Willy teaches the farmer how to make Chowder, Escargot, Fish Stew, and Lobster Bisqu. All of these dishes provide a temporary boost to your Fishing skill!

Willy has eight Loved Gifts:

  • Fish: Catfish, Sea Cucumber, Sturgeon, Octopus
  • Diamond
  • Iridium Bar
  • Mead
  • Pumpkin

If you’re a fan of fishing, you’ll be able to catch a Sturgeon during Summer at the Mountain Lake. These are quite tough to catch, so if you have no experience fishing, you may need to settle for giving Willy a Diamond instead.

Leo -26th Of Summer

Leo is a boy who initially lives on Ginger Island. If you haven’t accessed the Island yet, you may not even know this villager is out there! At heart levels three and seven, Leo teaches the farmer to make Poi and Mango Sticky Rice.

Leo has four Loved Gifts:

  • Duck Feather
  • Mango
  • Ostrich Egg
  • Poi

Since you’ll likely encounter Leo sometime in the middle of Year Two at the earliest, you should have no trouble gathering his preferred gifts. Duck Feathers in particular are easy to acquire if you have a Big Coop and a happy, mature Duck.

Fall Birthdays

Penny – 2nd Of Fall

Penny is another bachelorette whom you may want to marry. She’s the daughter of Pam, and she spends her days tutoring Vincent and Jas.

Penny has nine Loved Gifts:

  • Gems: Diamond, Emerald
  • Crops: Melon, Poppy
  • Foods: Red Plate, Roots Platter, Tom Kha Soup, Poppyseed Muffin
  • Sandfish

The gems are probably the easiest to find. If you’ve been mining at all, you may have spare Emeralds or Diamonds in your chest. You may also grow a Melon in Summer and store it until her birthday to give to her.

Elliott – 5th Of Fall

Elliott moved to Pelican Town wanting to be an author. He’s a potential marriage candidate who you sadly may have trouble finding a good gift for.

Elliott has six Loved Gifts:

  • Crab Cakes
  • Tom Kha Soup
  • Lobster
  • Squid Ink
  • Duck Feather
  • Pomegranate

Unless you’ve got a Big Coop with a Duck that can produce Feathers for you, the easiest thing to acquire in Year One is a Lobster. You must reach level three in Fishing, craft, or purchase a Crab Pot and place it in salt water with some Bait. Keep checking and refilling the pot with Bait until you find a Lobster!

Jodi – 11th Of Fall

Jodi is Sam and Vincent’s mother and wife of Kent. She will give you the recipes for Fried Calamari and Ice Cream after you reach three and seven hearts with her.

Jodi has eight Loved Gifts:

  • Diamond
  • Foods: Chocolate Cake, Crispy Bass, Fried Eel, Pancakes, Rhubarb Pie, Vegetable Medley, Eggplant Parmesan

Jodi is a bit of a foodie as we can see. The easiest dish to make here is Pancakes. You can buy the recipe for Pancakes in the Stardrop Saloon for 100g. After that, all you need is one Egg and some Wheat Flour to whip up a batch to give to Jodi.

Sandy has four Loved Gifts:

  • Flowers: Daffodil, Sweet Pea, Crocus
  • Mango Sticky Rice
