Everything you need to know about wheat in stardew valley!

Iris Eichinger

While in The Last of Us (tv) wheat may have been the end of times, in Stardew Valley it’s a simple, useful and fast-growing crop!  Growing wheat on your farm can give you hay, wheat flour for baking, beer and so much more!   In this complete guide I will go through how to grow it, how to use it and how to make the most money from it.

How to Grow Wheat?

There are actually several ways to get wheat seeds, such as from the Night Market, the Traveling Cart, treasure rooms in the Skull Cavern and of course Jojamart, but the most common and cheapest place to get them is from Pierre’s General Store for 10g.  Once planted in tilled soil it takes 4 days to be ready for harvest.  It is harvested using a scythe or golden scythe.  When you harvest wheat there is a 40% chance of dropping hay, which is great for feeding your animals!

What are the uses of wheat?

Wheat has plenty of uses in Stardew Valley.  On top of being used to make beer in the keg and wheat flour in the mill, which is extremely important in baking, wheat itself has gameplay uses.  It’s needed to complete the community center in the fodder bundle from the bulletin board.  You’ll need 10 wheat, 10 hay and 3 apples to complete it!  Wheat can also be used to tailor a dyeable Crop Tank Top in the spool of the sewing machine.   It can also be used to make yellow dye in the dye pots in Haley and Emily’s house.  While all villagers are neutral about being given wheat as a gift, it can be requested as a quest on the help wanted board outside Pierre’s General Store for 75g and 150 friendship points during the summer.  You also need wheat for Gourmand Frog’s puzzle on Ginger Island.  If your farm is livestock based than growing wheat is a great way to get hay for feeding animals without having to buy it from Marnie’s ranch!

What is the best way to make money from wheat?

The best way to make money from wheat is selling beer.  Beer is an artisan good made in kegs and only takes one wheat to make.  Although it takes a while, beer sells for 200g at the lowest!  Wheat itself sells for 25-50g depending on the quality, 27-55 with the Tiller Profession.   Beer sells for 200-400g depending on the quality, 280-560g with the Artisan Profession.  People who base their income off of beer usually fill their farm cellar with kegs and keeping them running on a loop.  If you want consistent product daily, try not filling all your kegs at once, so that way while half get done, half are still going.  If you’re looking for a non-alcoholic way to make money from wheat, selling bread is also profitable and if you have extra sugar and eggs some of the other baked goods might be a great solution for you!
