Description

An octopus is a type of fish that is obtainable through Fishing. It is a red-colored mollusk that can range in size between 12 and 49 inches in length.

Other than the Legendary Fish, octopi are the hardest fish to catch in the game with a difficulty score of 95. Another unique quality is that, along with stonefish, octopi cannot be eaten unless used in a recipe.

Where to find an octopus

Octopii can be caught in two different locations: at the Pelican Town beach, and in the ocean from Ginger Island.

To catch an octopus freely at the beach, it has to be during either the summer season, in any weather, and only from the hours of 6 AM to 1 PM. The beach is located directly to the south of Pelican Town, across the stone bridge.

The only other time an octopus can be caught naturally on the beach is during the Night Market which takes place on the 15th through the 17th of winter. During that time, there is a very slight (2.2% chance) of hooking an octopus on the deep-sea submarine ride.

The only way to catch an octopus outside of these seasons and times is through the use of magic bait.

If you want to catch an octopus on Ginger Island, it can be during any season. To access Ginger Island, you have to repair the boat in the backroom of Willy’s Fish Shop.

There are more ways to obtain an octopus than just through fishing though. You can find them inside garbage cans throughout Pelican Town during the summer. They can also be bought from the Traveling Cart for 450 to 1,000 gold each.

How to catch an octopus

Once all of the basic requirements are met, there is still only a 4-11% chance on the beach and a 5-18% chance on Ginger island of hooking an octopus.

Since octopi can be difficult to find and catch, it’s a good idea to maximize your chances of successfully reeling them in the first time around. To do this, you should use the Iridium fishing pole, bait, and either the trap or cork bobber.

What to do with an octopus

Octopi can be used for one bundle in the Community Center: The Master Fisher’s Bundle in the Fish Tank (remixed). The Community Center is located directly north of Pierre’s General Store. The reward for completing this bundle is one portion of Dish O’ The Sea, which is an especially good dish because it buffs your fishing skill (+3).

Only one villager loves getting it as a gift (Willy) and only one likes it (Elliott). Meanwhile, Demetrius, Leo, Linus, and Sebastian are all neutral to receiving an octopus as a gift. Everyone else in Stardew Valley either dislikes it or hates it.

There are a few quests where an octopus will be needed.

There is a chance of an octopus being requested randomly during the summer season on the Help Wanted board. This board is located on the front of Pierre’s General Store, next to the calendar. Completing this request gives 450 gold and 150 friendship points. Also, Willy or Demetrius can request 1-4 octopi during the summer on the Help Wanted board with a reward of 150g per fish. The catch with this quest is that you will be able to keep the fish afterward.

It can be sold at a base price of 150g, 187g for the silver quality, and 225g for the gold quality. When consumed, you will receive a boost of 0 energy, and 0 health.

Crafting

It can be crafted into three basic recipes: Maki Roll, Quality Fertilizer, and Sashimi. Though, all of these recipes can be crafted using any fish in the game; and it is important to note that Sashimi sells for significantly less than the cost of just the actual mollusk.

Octopi are also used in making the blue buttoned vest with the sewing machine, and as orange dye in the dye pots inside Emily and Haley’s house.

Fishing

When octopi are put into a fish pond they produce not only roe but Omni geodes as well at a population of 9 octopi.
